A Private Life

A Private Life

France 103 min.

Set in Paris, this psychological thriller and dark comedy follows Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster), a respected psychiatrist whose life begins to unravel after her longtime patient, Paula, dies suddenly and suspiciously. Unsatisfied with the ruling of suicide, Lilian launches her own investigation, which forces her to confront her actions and repressed emotions.

The film skillfully blends elements of a tense thriller and a Hitchcockian mystery with subtle dark comedy. Notably, its lead star, Jodie Foster, performs entirely in French. The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where Foster became the first American nominated for the prestigious French Lumière Award for Best Actress.
