Dreams

Dreams

Norway 110 min.

Johanne is 17 yrs old girl who develops a deep, passionate crush on her teacher. Her infatuation is so intense that she turns it into the memoir Confessions from a Dark Corner, which she shares with her mother and grandmother.

'Dreams' is the final instalment of Norwegian director and novelist Dag Johan Haugerud's acclaimed 'Oslo Trilogy'. Unlike the previous instalments, Sex and Love, this film focuses on the intensity of first love and teenage obsession, and how these themes are explored through the lens of family and older generations.

The film skilfully balances seriousness with subtle humour, raising questions about the boundaries between reality and fantasy, and truth and fabricated narrative. Evidently talented as a novelist, Haugerud creates a dialogue-rich work that celebrates the human need for a sense of importance and the definition of one's identity through relationships, whether realised or experienced only in dreams.
