Fire at Sea

Fire at Sea

Italy, France 114 min.

Samuele is a 12-year-old boy who lives on a remote island in the Mediterranean. He likes to climb the rocks by the sea, play with a slingshot and ski around the harbor. But his island is not like others.

For years, it has been the destination of men, women and children trying to cross the water border from Africa in too small, dilapidated boats. His island is Lampedusa, which has become a metaphor for the European refugee crisis, for the hopes, sufferings and destinies of hundreds of thousands of people. These people are looking for peace, freedom and a happier life, but often, instead of landing, their dead bodies are pulled from the sea. The inhabitants of Lampedusa witness the biggest humanitarian disaster of our time every day.
