Cherbourg, a small coastal town, November 1957. Seventeen-year-old Geneviève works in an umbrella shop with her mother. She is in love with Guy, a twenty-year-old mechanic, but they must meet in secret because her mother disapproves of the relationship, believing that her beautiful daughter can find a much better 'match'. When Guy receives his draft notice for the war in Algeria, the two young lovers decide to marry when he returns. The night before he leaves, they vow their eternal love and consummate their relationship for the first time. Some time later, Geneviève realises she is pregnant and writes to Guy to tell him, but he replies to her letters less and less frequently...
A masterpiece by the French director Jacques Demy, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most enchanting and visually striking films of the French New Wave. What sets it apart is that it is sung in its entirety: all dialogue is performed in recitative form and set to Michel Legrand's unforgettable music.
The film creates a distinctive, hyperreal yet highly stylised world. Walls, costumes and umbrellas are rendered in vivid, saturated colours that reflect and intensify the characters' emotional states. Despite its fairy-tale aesthetic, it is a deeply melancholic portrayal of first love and how life choices and circumstances shape our destinies.
The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and became a global cultural phenomenon, influencing generations of filmmakers, including Damien Chazelle (La La Land).
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg remains an unparalleled fusion of Hollywood musical glamour and bittersweet European realism — a film that redefined the boundaries of the cinematic medium.
