God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya

God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya

Republic of North Macedonia, Belgium, France, Croatia, Slovenia 100 min.

In the Macedonian drama, which was awarded the prize of the ecumenical jury at the Berlinale, director Teona Strugar Mitevska brings a satire based on the true story of a woman who comes into conflict with outdated traditions.

Every January, a local priest throws a wooden cross into the river, followed by hundreds of men. He who emerges from it, the custom says, will be accompanied by happiness and success. This time, the inconspicuous Petrunia spontaneously dives behind the cross, and manages to snatch it before the others. The men are furious and chaos ensues, but Petrunia does not give up. The film questions democratic changes in Macedonian society, condemning the behavior of the church, the judiciary and the media.
