Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful

Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful

Germany 93 min.

One of the great masters of photography, Helmut Newton made a name for himself by exploring the female form, and his iconic status lived on long after his tragic death in a Los Angeles car accident in 2004.

Newton worked around the world, from Singapore to Australia, from Paris to Los Angeles, but Weimar Germany remained the visual backbone of his oeuvre. Newton's unique and strange way of depicting women has always come with the question: was he empowering his subjects or was he presenting them as sex objects? Through a series of candid conversations with Grace Jones, Charlotte Rampling, Isabella Rossellini, Anna Wintour, Claudia Schiffer, Marianne Faithfull, Hanna Schygulla, Nadja Auermann and Newton's wife June (aka Alice Springs photographer), this documentary explores his legacy and attempts to answer the questions about topics that run through the core of his life's work - the creation of provocative and subversive images of women.
