Hiroshima Mon Amour

Hiroshima Mon Amour

France, Japan 90 min.

Elle comes to Hiroshima to make a peace film, where she meets a man who reminds her of her first love. Despite being married, they spend a passionate night together, after which he invites her to stay in Hiroshima.

Following his groundbreaking film Night and Fog (Nuit et brouillard, 1955), in which he approached the Shoah in an unprecedented manner, a crime that, due to its scale, transcended the boundaries of knowledge and comprehension, evading the possibility of testimony and memory, Alain Resnais returned to a traumatic event in his first feature-length fictional film. Like the aforementioned genocide, this event represented a new dimension of criminality in the long history of human depravity, marking a turning point in the industrial development of humankind. This experience was, of course, the atomic bomb, whose explosion ushered in the nuclear age.
