This omnibus edition contains three stories set on the same night in Memphis, Tennessee — the southern city where Elvis Presley spent much of his life. The first story is called: Far from Yokohama Mitsuko and Jun are a teenage couple from Japan. During their journey across America, they stop in Memphis because Mitsuko is obsessed with Elvis. They visit the famous Sun Records studio, where the 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' recorded his first songs, before staying at the Arcade Hotel. Second story: A Ghost Luisa, an Italian widow, is stranded in Memphis while accompanying her husband’s coffin back to Italy. She also stays at the Arcade Hotel, sharing a room with Dee Dee, a young woman who has just broken up with her British boyfriend, Johnny. Third story: Lost in Space Disturbed by the loss of his girlfriend and his job, Johnny, who is drunk and has been nicknamed Elvis, pulls a gun in a bar before leaving with his friend Will and his ex-girlfriend’s brother, Charlie. They head to a store that Johnny proceeds to rob.
This Jim Jarmusch film also premiered in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Artistic Contribution. It was nominated in six categories at the Independent Spirit Awards: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Female Lead (Yuki Kudo) and Best Supporting Male (with two nominees in this category: Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Steve Buscemi, who gave one of his early standout performances in this film).
