MASH

MASH

USA 116 min.

The staff of a Korean War field hospital use humor and high jinks to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war.

A special dose of humor, hilarity, and unprofessional military behavior is brought by newcomer surgeons ‘Hawkeye’ Pierce, Duke Forrest and ‘Trapper’ John McIntyre. The unit commander, Colonel Henry Blake, doesn’t care about their behavior as long as it doesn’t affect him and as long as they do their job conscientiously and professionally, which they do. Their behavior, on the other hand, bothers a fellow surgeon, Frank Burns, and the recently arrived head nurse, Major Margaret Houlihan, known as 'Hot Lips'.

Altman's first major succes gave new meaning to the word 'irreverence', set new style for contemporary filmmaking; follows black comedy exploits of wild and wooly medical unit during Korean war in hilarious episodic fashion.

The main roles are played by the inimitable Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt and Robert Duvall, and the success of the film itself resulted in a long-running TV series of the same name. Of the many accolades picked up by Altman’s MASH, the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, the ‘Golden Palm’ at Cannes, the ‘Golden Globe’ in the Best Comedy or Musical category and many others are definitely worth mentioning.
