Mediterranean Film Showcase: Deaf

Spain 99 min.

Ángela is a young deaf woman expecting a child with her hearing partner, Héctor. As time goes by, her fears about motherhood grow, and after the birth of their daughter, she struggles to fulfil her role as a mother in a world that is not adapted for deaf people, not to mention Héctor’s lack of understanding.

This powerful and moving drama, directed by Eva Libertad, is a semi-autobiographical story about the lead actress, Miriam Garlo. Using Spanish Sign Language and inventive sound design, it portrays the life of a deaf woman who is facing the challenges of raising a child in a world that she feels is not hers. The film premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Film.
