Director Gustav Borg (played by Stellan Skarsgård) has always prioritised work over his relationship with his daughters, Nora (played by Renate Reinsve – The Worst Person in the World) and Agnes. When Nora, now an acclaimed stage actress, refuses a role in his new film, Gustav turns to the young and ambitious Hollywood star Rachel Kemp (played by Elle Fanning). Based on a tragedy that took place in their family home, Gustav's new film eventually captures the attention of his daughters, too.

Sentimental Value is a work distinguished by emotional authenticity, psychological nuance, and a refusal of cheap melodrama. It won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025 and the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. It also received eight additional nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Film Editing. The film won the European Film Academy Award for Best Film and a Golden Globe.
