Sound of Falling

Sound of Falling

Germany 149 min.

This is an intimate and surreal portrait of four generations of women (Alma, Erika, Angelika and Lenka) who live in the same house in northern Germany. It traces their coming of age and how their lives mirror each other across the centuries. It is Germany's submission for the Academy Awards, winner of the Critics' Prize at Cannes and nominated for eight European Film Awards.

Four girls and their families live in a rural house in Altmark, a region in northern Germany along the Elbe River. We meet Alma (Hanna Hecker) around 1910, Erika (Lea Drinda) shortly after the Second World War, Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) in 1980s East Germany, and Lenka (Laeni Geiseler) in the present day. We witness their childhoods and coming of age in alternating time periods, while simultaneously tracing the house's evolution over the centuries, where echoes of the past linger within its walls. Though separated by nearly a hundred years, their lives begin to mirror one another.
