Travis Bickle is a lonely and depressed 26-year-old; in his later actions he shows that he probably has some more serious mental problems as well.

In New York, he is employed as a taxi driver and works overtime because he also suffers from insomnia. He spends his free time in pornographic cinemas or wandering around the city. The prostitutes, thieves and drug addicts he meets in the slums of the city provoke disgust and a desire "to clean the dirt of the streets".
