The Electric Kiss

The Electric Kiss

France, Belgium 122 min.

Paris, 1928. Suzanne, a struggling fairground performer known as the Electric Venus, earns a living by performing a humiliating act in which men pay to kiss her and receive an electric shock, supposedly to experience the 'electricity of love'. One night, while stealing from her clairvoyant neighbour, she is mistaken for a medium by Antoine, a grieving painter who is desperate to make contact with his deceased wife. Although initially reluctant, Suzanne cannot turn down the money and delivers a convincing séance that deeply moves Antoine. He invites her to his home for another séance, generously paying her. As she leaves his villa, Suzanne encounters his agent, Armand, who has witnessed the deception. Initially, he condemns her for exploiting his friend's grief, but when Antoine is newly inspired and begins painting again, Armand's attitude changes. Sensing an opportunity, Armand suggests they continue the charade, offering her a share of the profits. She returns regularly to conduct séances, secretly studying the late wife's diaries to maintain the illusion. However, as a romantic spark begins to develop between Suzanne and Antoine, the line between performance and genuine emotion starts to blur, threatening to expose the entire deception.

Starring Pio Marmaï, Anaïs Demoustier and Gilles Lellouche, Pierre Salvadori’s romantic comedy tells the story of romantic entanglements and new beginnings. The film opened this year's Cannes Film Festival.
