The Handmaiden

The Handmaiden

South Korea 144 min.

A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her.

Around 1930, in Korea under Japanese rule, Lady Hideko, a beautiful and fragile Japanese heiress, lives with her sadistic and despotic uncle Kouzuki, an intellectual and an avid collector of rare erotic literature, who has raised her since the tender age of five planning to marry her for her riches. As a result, confined in a dreary and sun-deprived mansion, Lady Hideko is a triste bird in a gilded cage and a seemingly easy target for Count Fujiwara, a forger and an outright con man in disguise, who hires Sook-hee, a dexterous young pickpocket, to act as the new handmaiden. So, with the intention to possess her father's inheritance, the Count needs Sook-hee to assist him in persuading the unaware noblewoman to marry him, and when the elaborate scam is finally successful, ruthlessly and without an ounce of remorse, he will send her forever to the madhouse. However, little do they know, that theirs is a doomed scheme and no match for Lady Hideko's unparalleled beauty with her long raven hair and the luscious scarlet lips on a pale and velvety skin.
