The Thing to Be Done
A former electrician, a social worker, and a trade union activist join forces on what seems like an impossible mission. Today’s Europe relies on the cheap labor of migrant workers who, in search of a better life, accept poor working conditions, overtime hours, sleeping in containers, employer blackmail, and the erosion of their dignity.
Laura Orel, Goran Lukić, Goran Zrnić, and their Workers’ Counseling Center are their only allies. Every day, workers from the Balkans, Africa, and Asia come to this unusual organization for help. They are deceived, hungry, and without earned wages or hope for a better tomorrow. This is a story about the dark side of contemporary Europe, as well as about genuine trade union work and its possibilities and limitations, and about the selfless solidarity that remains possible despite everything.
