German troops are not far from Paris. Georg manages to escape to Marseille at the last minute. In his luggage he carries the belongings of the communist writer Weidel, who took his own life in fear of persecution.

Assuming his identity in order to obtain travel documents, Georg in Marseille must await the departure of his ship. But when he meets the mysterious Marie, his plans change. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Anne Seghers, which she wrote in exile during World War II. In contemporary Marseille, refugees from that and this time meet, and all their stories together form a space of permanent transit.
