Young Mothers
At a shelter for young mothers near Liège, Jessica, Perla, Julie, Ariane and Naïma are trying to build a better future for themselves and their newborn babies, even though they are still children themselves. The film delves into their traumas, addictions and feelings of abandonment, while also showcasing their mutual solidarity and the invaluable support offered by the shelter staff.
Shot in the distinctive social realist style of the Dardenne brothers, the film is structured like a mosaic, with several equally important stories coming together to create a moving portrait filled with hope and resilience. It premiered in the official competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the awards for Best Screenplay and the Jury Prize. It was also Belgium’s submission for the Academy Awards.
Variety wrote that the Belgian Dardenne brothers "adopt a moving and sincere approach in their tenth feature film".
The New Yorker: 'A tender gift from the Dardenne brothers... a drama infused with disarming empathy.'
