Jim Jarmusch Retrospective in April and May

19.04.2026.

Throughout April and May, Kino Zona Zadar will host a special film program dedicated to one of the most important figures in American independent cinema, Jim Jarmusch. The series features a curated selection of his films, offering audiences insight into the evolution of his unique voice, which has influenced global cinema for decades.

Jarmusch, born in Akron, Ohio, in 1953, is one of the most prominent and influential American independent film directors, screenwriters, producers, and musicians. For over forty years, his work has redefined cinematic expression in the United States and strengthened the artistic self-awareness of independent production alongside the Hollywood mainstream. Jarmusch graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English and American literature, which strongly influenced his sensibility. His films reveal a literary structure, a sense of rhythm, and poetic concentration.

His style is characterized by a minimalist approach with long takes, a static camera, slow pacing, fragmented narratives, and a distinctive sense of humor and irony. Outsiders—immigrants, loners, and drifters—are at the center of his interest, and through them, Jarmusch explores universal human experiences. Music plays an equally important narrative role in his films, and his collaborations with artists such as Tom Waits, Neil Young, and Iggy Pop highlight his interdisciplinary approach.

The program includes key works tracing the development of his style, from the minimalist classic Stranger Than Paradise (1984) to Down by Law (1986), Mystery Train (1989), the anthology film Night on Earth (1991), and the cult western Dead Man (1995). The cycle also features Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) and the more recent title Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, extending the program into the later phases of his career.

Screening schedule (all screenings start at 8:00 PM):

  • Friday, April 24 – Stranger Than Paradise
  • Tuesday, April 28 – Down by Law
  • Wednesday, May 6 – Mystery Train
  • Wednesday, May 13 – Night on Earth
