The darkly comedic thriller One Battle After Another won the award for Best Picture at Sunday's Oscars ceremony, leading the night with six trophies ahead of Sinners and Frankenstein.

"Let's have a martini! This is pretty incredible," said director Paul Thomas Anderson onstage after his film was announced as the winner of the top prize.

In this unusual story of political resistance, Leonardo DiCaprio plays a former revolutionary who grows up to become a single father. However, he missed out on the Oscar for Best Actor.

Before this ceremony, Anderson had received 11 Oscar nominations but no awards. Now, he has won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The film's star, Sean Penn, was named Best Supporting Actor for his role as an obsessive military officer. It is Penn’s third Oscar. Penn often skips film industry award ceremonies and was not present at the Dolby Theatre.

"Sean Penn couldn't or didn't want to be here, so I'll accept the award on his behalf," said host Kieran Culkin, last year's winner for Best Supporting Actor.

"Sinners" finished the night with four awards, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, who played twin brothers Smoke and Stack.

Set in the American South during the era of segregation, the film celebrates blues music and Black culture with an unusual twist.

Hamnet

“I stand here because of the people who came before me,” said Jordan, citing previous Oscar winners of color, including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Halle Berry. "I will keep moving forward and continue being the best version of myself."

Irish actress Jessie Buckley won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as William Shakespeare’s wife in the film Hamnet. The film explores how the couple copes with the death of their 11-year-old son.

"I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother's heart," said Buckley. “We all come from a line of women who continue to create despite everything.”

Seventy-five-year-old Amy Madigan won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as the eccentric Aunt Gladys in the horror film Weapons. This is her first Oscar win, 40 years after her first nomination.

Sentimental Value

K-Pop: Demon Hunters, a Netflix film that became a global phenomenon, was named Best Animated Feature. Its catchy song “Golden” won the award for Best Original Song.

During the gala ceremony, the mood turned somber at one point due to the passing of two major figures in the film industry: Robert Redford and Rob Reiner.

Barbra Streisand, who starred with Redford in “The Way We Were,” called him a “brilliant, subtle actor” and an “intellectual cowboy.” She ended her tribute by singing a few lines from the famous title song of the film.

Winners of the golden statuettes are chosen by the approximately 10,000 actors, producers, directors, and other film professionals who comprise the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
